The bill that I'm sponsoring, is a plan to create an elder death review team to investigate suspicious deaths whether they're in nursing homes or in the home. That idea and need came, actually, from Dr. Dean Sienko, who as our medical examiner here in Ingham County, felt that there was a need for us to do as we do with child death review teams, to establish an elder death review team. They would be created optionally at the county level, and they would empower our county medical examiners to establish protocols to be used in investigations, and to bring together a cross-disciplinary team to look at deaths of elderly people. Our plan would hopefully put an end to some of that.

There are many reasons seniors don't report abuse. They are often embarrassed, they don't know where to go, they don't want to go down to a police station and make some kind of a formal complaint. Oftentimes, they're afraid of the very people who are providing their care; they don't want to make them angry, they don't want to really jeopardize their own care. So, what this bill would do, it would allow a third party to actually make that complaint, and this would allow a concerned citizen who suspects abuse to file a complaint on behalf of their neighbor or an elderly relative, so that we can stop the abuse. Michigan law currently makes an exception for victims of domestic abuse, for instance - they're not required to come to court to swear out a complaint. We would also provide that for people who file complaints in the case of elder abuse.

After listening to the Governor tonight, I am extremely encouraged and optimistic. We know that it's going to be a tough year, a few tough years ahead but she laid out a plan. If we work together, in a bi-partisan way, thinking about Michigan first, all of us, the Governor, the Legislature, and really talk about jobs, come up with programs that, for economic development, education, strengthen our educational system, do the things that we know are important for Michigan, I feel very optimistic that we can turn this around together.

Every child is special, and every child deserves to have health insurance.

This is Representative Joan Bauer reminding you that Michigan has two programs; MIChild and Healthy Kids, to be sure uninsured children in Michigan families can be covered.

Many HMOs and other health care plans throughout Michigan provide MIChild services. If your child qualifies, you pay a monthly premium of only $10. Even if you have more than one child, you pay only $10 a month and there are no co-pays or deductibles.

Healthy Kids is a program for pregnant women, babies and children under 18. Families that qualify for Healthy Kids do not pay premiums or deductibles, but some HMOs may charge small co-pays.

You can apply online at healthcare4mi.com. That's healthcare, the number 4, mi.com. If you apply online you can usually find out in 30 minutes or less if your children are eligible. For more information, call toll free 1-888-988-6300. That's 1-888-988-6300.
