LANSING – State Representative Joan Bauer (D-Lansing) today announced that she will be holding several reading sessions in March with local children at branches of the Capital Area District Library, in celebration of "Reps Read Across Michigan 2008."
"The importance of reading to children cannot be overestimated," Bauer said. "Teaching our children to read is fundamental to preparing them for a lifetime of success. I am excited by this opportunity to share my love of reading with Lansing children and help enrich their lives with books."
Bauer will be reading at the following times and locations:
March 1st, 2:00 p.m., Downtown Lansing branch
March 13th 7:00 p.m., Foster branch
March 25th, 10:30 a.m., South Lansing branch
March 27th, 11:00 a.m., Downtown Lansing branch
The "Reps Read Across Michigan" program is an annual bipartisan event that focuses on the importance of motivating children to read in addition to helping them master basic skills.
"It is no secret that children who are read to at home have a higher success rate in school and develop stronger reading skills," Bauer said. "Education is a collective effort and it is important for State Representatives and other leaders in the community to take an active role in encouraging our children to become lifelong readers and learners."
