Legislation of Special Interest to the 68th District

HB 5184 (also known as "Community Dream"), which conveys state property to the city of Lansing for use by Lansing Eastern High School and Lansing Catholic Central High School for the purpose of building a shared sports complex. The bill passed both the House and the Senate and was signed by the Governor.

HB 6094, which authorizes the State of Michigan to exchange property with the City of Lansing. This property is essential for the development of the Capital Club Towers, an eighteen story mixed-use building that will bring new retail, restaurants, health club and housing to downtown Lansing. This bill passed both the House of Representatives and the Senate and was signed by the Governor.

HB 6437, which protects property tax exemptions for Michigan’s Girl Scout councils during their upcoming statewide mergers. In addition it increases the limitation on property tax exemption from 400 acres to 640 acres for boy and girl scout camps, 4-H camps, and YMCA and YWCA camps The bill passed both the House and the Senate and was signed by the Governor.

HB 6403, which authorizes the sale of property owned by the State of Michigan to Emergent Biosolutions (Bioport) for fair market value . This property acquisition was recommended by Homeland Security. In addition to providing a buffer zone for Emergent Biosolutions, it also allows for the company to expand. The bill passed the House and is now awaiting action in the Senate.

HB 6548, which requires a landlord whose property is in a flood plain to disclose this to tenants so they can purchase appropriate insurance. This bill was referred to the House Intergovernmental, Urban and Regional Affairs Committee.

HB 6619 and 6620, which allow the Tax Increment Finance Authority of Lansing to refinance bond obligations through the year 2039.

HB 4625, which holds employers accountable if they do not provide equal pay for equal work, was passed by the House in 2007. In Michigan in 2007, a women employed full-time and year-round earns about 70 cents for every dollar earned by a man. This wage discrepancy hurts families and hurts the Michigan economy.
